Just like…

I'm just beginning work on Mark Waters' new flick JUST LIKE HEAVEN. It's a gorgeous looking film, set in SF, and it's romantic and heartfelt. I've been looking forward to this for months. I have been thinking about another large orchestral score and what I'd like to try this time, and that's just what Mark has asked for. I've been away for a while, recharging after Matador and Crashers, and it feels really nice to be back at work.

I've just updated my writing studio and have had a few teething problems with things like Midi Over LAN, and I got rid of my analogue mixer so I am adjusting to digital life. The change feels good, though it'll take a little getting used to, and I'm very glad I have Stephen and others to call on to help me when I get snagged. As of yesterday evening everything was working. Fingers crossed.

Mr. Kent,
I came across your website a few months ago, and recently re-visited and noticed your new blog. Thank you for having a presence on the Internet, and more importantly, making your music and rare tracks available for downloading. I've already purchased your CDs, but it is a delight to listen to selections from"Citizen Ruth" and "Election."

Two of my favorite films are "About Schmidt" and "Sideways," and one of the aspects I love about each film is your amazing score. In all of Alexander Payne's films, you have created themes which perfectly fit with the characters and emotions. I am continually impressed with your handle on both comedic and dramatic scoring. "About Schmidt" is one of my favorite soundtracks for that reason.

I'm actually a 20-year old Iowa 'filmmaker' -- I hate to use that word, as in this day and (digital) age, every 20-year old is a filmmaker -- but your music has been an incredible inspiration while writing my latest feature screenplay, and I wanted to thank you for creating such brilliance.

I also created and manage the website, www.alexanderpayne.net. I was tired of searching the Internet for various information about Alexander's films, and decided to create a comprehensive collection of information. I hope you don't mind, but I've added links to your MP3s and web site.

Once again, thanks for creating such magnificent scores, and best of luck with your future projects. Thanks for reading this, and take care!

Wow! I just got back from seeing this movie ("Just Like Heaven") and I was totally blown away by the score! Please let me say that I've been collecting movie scores for 20 years (I have almost 6000) and I have no hesitation in naming "Just Like Heaven" one of the top 5 scores of 2005.

The clever subtlety of the first half was beaten only by the grandness and beauty of "that theme" which, I have to admit, brought tears to my eyes. Forgive me for drawing comparisons but it had a certain John Barry-esqueness about it that I found absolutely breathtaking. I'm delighted the director didn't find it too big as, I believe, was the concern.

I've bought the soundtrack CD (of course) but there just isn't enough of your score on there. Is there any chance you could post some unreleased cues on your site, or send them to me via e-mail? I'd be so, so, SO unbelievably grateful! Please! :-)

Thanks for creating something truly magical!

Best wishes,

John
