Christmas in June, July & August
Just starting FRED CLAUS; I get to spend 3 months of my Summer living & working in Christmas! OK, so much as I am trying to get away from comedies, I must admit I am enjoying this one. Directed by my pal David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) it is warm hearted and very entertaining. It's about Santa's dysfunctional brother Fred (Vince Vaughn).
It's also fun because DD has asked for a big orchestra, and that doesn't happen all that often these days. Mostly directors ask me for a sense of intimacy in the music, and the ensembles are small. So the grand approach is a rare opportunity for me.

Hi Rolfe,
I really admire your Sideways soundtrack.
When I first heard the music I had a feeling that the musicians drought a bottle of whisky each and next day tried to play jazz with that terrible hangover :)
It has a really unique dizzy sound and works great with the movie mood.
Btw which of the percussionists played bongos and congas?
Good luck!

Hey Rolfe. First I'll say that I very much enjoy listening to your scores... both with and without the picture it was written for. My question(s): Do you do midi mock-ups of your cues to get approval from the director? If so, I'm curious what's your favorite library to use? It would be very helpful and interesting to be able to hear both versions of some particular piece. A midi mock-up using samples and then also the final cue played by a real orchestra that ended up in a film. It would be a great lesson for us beginning composers to hear both the demo and then the "real" version to compare & to see the differences a conductor and live musicians can bring to a piece and also how good the demos need to be in order to convince a director that it will work. Thanks!

Is the music (for harp and strings) from "About Schmidt" available in print?
Bobr, it's Alex Acuna, and Tiki, played the percussion on Sideways.
Ruckus, Yes I do midi mock-ups of everything for the director/. I want them to be very comfortable with the sounds before we go to the orchestra.
And No Marg, I'm not aware of any published music from About Schmidt. Which piece were you most interested in?
Rolfe
